Building resilience to prevent alcohol and drug misuse
As part of the group of charities affiliated with the Mentor International Foundation, Mentor UK promotes the health and well-being of children and young people in order to prevent alcohol and drug misuse.
They do this by ensuring:
- Every child in the UK receives sufficient, appropriately delivered evidence-based alcohol and drug prevention in school.
- Parents have free access to the best information and support to help them protect their children from alcohol and drug harms, and related risky behaviours.
- Policy makers prioritise prevention and early intervention.
Mentor takes a holistic approach to preventing the misuse of alcohol and drugs. They work closely with partners in the public, private, voluntary and independent sectors across England and Scotland to provide community-based support for children and the adults in their lives.
Their approach is rooted in building young people’s resilience, helping them develop the life skills they need in order to negotiate challenging situations.
Mentor is working for an effective, comprehensive and national prevention strategy, through families, schools and communities. Building an evidence base of ‘what works’ in prevention is vital to ensuring Mentor’s work is effective, and underpins all that they do. As the UK’s leading voice in drug and alcohol prevention, they also often contribute to or are referenced in drug and alcohol policies in the UK.
